 Mission Asia
The growing importance of India and China on the international scene is reflected by some commentators calling the 21st Century 'The Asian Century'. That aside, 60% of the world's population, including many unreached people groups, live in the diverse countries and landscapes that make up Asia.
At Redcliffe we recognise the huge role of Asian mission, in terms of mission both to and from these countries. We have appointed Dr Kang-San Tan, from Malaysia, as our Head of Mission Studies and greatly appreciate the unique perspectives he brings to our teaching. Together with his wife Loun-Ling and in conjunction with several mission agencies, Dr Tan is developing an Asian mission studies track, including specific modules for the Asian context. These will be in addition to current modules such as Contextualised Theology and Christian Response to Islam, which are relevant to people wanting to work in Asia, or with the growing Asian Diaspora in UK and Europe.
"Asia is undergoing major changes in its political and socio-religious landscape. At Redcliffe, we seek a multi-disciplinary approach which includes Asian countries expertise, socio-cultural studies, and theological analysis, practical engagement with Asian peoples. This will enable students to reflect critically on the dynamic interplay between ancient religions, ethnic cultures and modernising trends in Asia." (Dr Kang-San Tan, Head of Mission Studies)
Along with Kang-San, several faculty members have first hand 'Asian mission' experience, having worked in Indonesia and the Philippines, India and Nepal. We also maintain strong links with Christian mission organisations working in Asia.
Many of our students come from Asia or Asian backgrounds, and Redcliffe's Strategic Leadership Fund enables one or more students from Asia to study mission at the college each year.
