Redcliffe's recent intensive Hebrew in a Week course inspired as well as informed students.

Intensive Hebrew course inspires students

Redcliffe has just hosted its second annual Hebrew in a Week course, which provides the opportunity to learn the basics of Biblical Hebrew in just six days. Participants came from a variety of backgrounds with one coming from as far afield as Germany!

Tricia Johnson, Redcliffe's lecturer in Biblical Hebrew, and Tim Davy, recently appointed lecturer in Biblical Studies, co-taught the course.

Each day began with devotions followed by a mixture of upfront teaching, group work, interactive exercises and personal study. Reflecting on the challenges of such an intense course Tim comments,

"It is vital in a week like this to maintain momentum, variety and enthusiasm. Tricia and I worked hard to develop a programme that delivers substantial content, yet does so in a varied and balanced way so that differing learning styles are catered for.

"We were delighted with how the week went," enthused Tim, "and the focus, enjoyment and fellowship exhibited by the students impressed us both. One of the themes of the morning devotions was the importance of using what we learn to be a blessing to others. As the students return to their churches, ministry training, workplaces, and cross-cultural situations, it is our prayer that the course will have equipped them further to be that blessing."

And what about the students themselves? Although intense, the course's focus helped to instil a great sense of community: "The balance of formal sessions and private study I thought was excellent and also helped create a camaraderie." Another participant summed up the week like this: "I feel inspired to learn more." What more could a teacher ask for?
