New MA in Justice, Advocacy and Reconciliation in Intercultural Contexts

Justice, Advocacy and Reconciliation are key issues in mission today. How should Christians respond to global – and local – issues of justice and injustice, and what are the Biblical frameworks they can use?
We are delighted to announce the launch of an exciting new MA programme exploring these issues. The
MA in Justice, Advocacy and Reconciliation in Intercultural Contexts, which is subject to validation by the University of Gloucestershire, is being developed in consultation with Christian Aid, International Justice Mission, Micah Challenge, Care, Coventry Cathedral’s Reconciliation ministry, along with others who will be involved in the ongoing development and delivery of the course. The expected launch date is September 2012.
Planned core modules include 'Just Mission - justice issues in intercultural contexts', and 'Advocacy, Reconciliation and Peace-building in intercultural contexts'. Students will also be able to choose a module from a wide range of contextual and issue-related topics, such as Postcolonialism and Globalisation, Crucial Issues in Asian or European mission, Greening of Mission, the Theology of Religions, and Global Leadership.
The MA is being developed by Andy and Carol Kingston-Smith, lecturers in mission at Redcliffe and co-founders of the jusTice initiative.
Joel Edwards, International Director of Micah Challenge commented: “Justice is still the ugly sister in theological education. This is an awful tragedy because it remains one of the most pervasive ideas and convictions in the Bible. Our reluctance to go beyond acts of kindness to explore and respond to systemic injustices has a great deal to do with a distinct lack of theological reflection.
"The jusTice initiative is attempting to put that right and deserves our support. It’s a recognition that a more robust biblical reflection on this critical issue will produce a generation of men and women who are truly able to show the whole council of God, make a substantial difference to our biblical advocacy and in turn, make a material difference to the 1.4 billion people who still live in abject poverty.”
Colin Bulley, Academic Dean at Redcliffe added: “Redcliffe is increasingly recognised as a centre for postgraduate study which addresses some of the most difficult issues in mission today. The new Justice, Advocacy and Reconciliation MA adds another dimension to these studies, and further equips missionaries and others with Biblical and missiological frameworks in which to think and act.”
