When Jamaican student Robert went on an African mission placement to Kenya, he said he felt he had 'come home'. He is one of many students who come to Redcliffe to prepare for African mission. Of course, for other students, Africa is home, and the training they receive will enable them to carry out their mission work with greater effectiveness.
Undergradate modules such as Christian ethics, Christian encounter with the spirit world and Between the global and the local:mission theologies in context, are particularly useful to students with an interest in African mission. There are also many opportunities for mission placements on the continent, and we are regularly in touch with mission agencies who work in Africa, including SIM, AIM, Oasis and UFM.
At Postgraduate level, our MA in Global Issues in Contemporary Mission is very relevant to Africans and non-Africans alike working in the continent. Modules include Post-colomialism and globalisation, Prosperity theology and suffering, and the Greening of Mission, which focuses on environmental issues. Our new undergraduate and postgraduate modules on justice in mission also touch on many of the issues encountered by those inolved in African mission.
Several of our academic and non-academic staff have mission experience in Africa. Our Vice-Principal, Colin Bulley worked in Nigeria for nine years, while Rob Cook, Head of Theology taught in Uganda. Former students from Africa have gone on to work in leadership roles througout the continent, including with Scripture Union, IFES and the Anglican church.
Redcliffe has links with the Christian University in Uganda, where two former Redcliffe lecturers now work. The Pan-African network RURCON is also a partner, and our students have benefited from the input of several of their mission staff who have lectured at the college.
