The growing importance of India and China on the international scene is reflected by some commentators calling the 21st Century 'The Asian Century'. That aside, 60% of the world's population, including many unreached people groups, live in the diverse countries and landscapes that make up Asia.
At Redcliffe we recognise the huge role of Asian mission, in terms of mission both to and from these countries. Several of our lecturers and associate lecturers have Asian mission experience. Hugh Kemp, Redcliffe's Head of Mission Stiudies grew up in India in a missionary family and he worked in Mongolia with Interserve.
Undergraduate modules such as World religions in global perspective; Christian encounter with Buddhism and Hinduism and those focusing on justice issues are particularly relevant to those preparing for mission in Asia, and there are many placement opportunities in all areas. At postgraduate level, our MA in Intercultural Studies in Asian Contexts is specificially for those working in Asian contexts or with the growing Asian Diaspora in the UK and Europe.
For the last few years, Redcliffe hosted the Asian Mission Consultation, organised in partnership with several mission agencies. Papers from these consultations are availalbe from our online Encounters mission journal.
Alongside Hugh Kemp, several other lecturers and associate lecturers have first hand 'Asian mission' experience, having worked in Nepal, Bangladesh, and East Asia. We also maintain strong links with Christian mission organisations working in Asia.
Many of our students come from Asia or Asian backgrounds, and Redcliffe's Strategic Leadership Fund enables one or more students from Asia to study mission at the college each year.
