Biblical Hebrew Week

30 June - 6 July 2013

Our popular intensive Biblical Hebrew week is held annually. You can choose from either the introductory course for beginners or the intermediate programme for those wanting to develop their grasp of the language.

Biblical Hebrew for Beginners

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the building blocks of the Hebrew alphabet, vocabulary and grammar - but weren’t sure where to start, then our Hebrew week is for you.

You’ll work in groups and on your own, and immerse yourself in a unique learning experience. The intensive week of teaching means that you are exposed to the language in a concentrated form and focussed environment without any other distractions.

The week aims to help you:
  • Cover the basics of the Hebrew Language
  • Work with others on a variety of Old Testament texts
  • Appreciate more the literary character of the Old Testament (poetry, narrative, proverbs, etc.)
  • Gain the skills and confidence to continue learning after the week has finished.
Even if you think you are no good at languages, it is amazing how much you will learn given the right environment.

Moving on with Biblical Hebrew

If you have some knowledge of Biblical Hebrew, but would like to revise and improve your skills, then why not join our ‘Moving On’ group, which will run alongside the Biblical Hebrew for Beginners week.

You can choose to work independently or with one or two others, and enjoy time out to improve and consolidate your previous study.

The week aims to:
  • Refresh your knowledge of Biblical Hebrew through giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in language study
  • Give you feedback and expert advice on translation of a variety of Old Testament texts representing the different genres of the Hebrew Bible.

What will I be doing?

Both groups begin on Sunday evening with a relaxed introductory session. Each day will begin with devotions, followed by study.

The Beginners Group study sessions will include mixture of teaching, small group work, creative activities, translations, games and private study.

The ‘Moving On’ Group are welcome to join formal teaching sessions if there is some aspect of grammar that you would like to brush up on or even learn. At any point Tricia will be happy to help out with any questions you might have.

The course ends on Saturday lunchtime.

Who is teaching?

Tricia Johnson has lectured in Biblical Hebrew at Redcliffe for nearly 20 years, and wrote her own course specifically with the students’ needs in mind. She has a degree in theology and counselling, and is experienced in getting alongside distraught students!  With her husband, Richard, she wrote a commentary on Genesis. They have two daughters.
