A “white knuckle ride” through Taipei on the back of a motorcycle is one of Mark and Rachel’s abiding memories during their placement in Taiwan.
The couple spent four weeks observing the work of OMF missionaries in three cities. Ministries include reaching out to dysfunctional families, outreach to shop and restaurant workers, caring for the homeless and orphans, schools and student ministry.
“During our time in Taiwan, we were able to reflect on what we had learnt at college and see holistic mission in action through the missionaries,” says Mark, who was studying for a
BA(Hons) degree in Applied Theology in Intercultural Contexts“The work in Taiwan is a slow process of getting involved in individuals’ lives and enabling them to realise the gospel of Jesus Christ can change them and they can glorify God as a result.”
Another “snapshot” was a visit to a temple. “We were deeply moved by the amount of young people there, praying and offering incense to idols in the hope that it would help them pass their exams. The futility of what they were doing and the lack of hope they have really struck a chord with us,” says Mark.
“We've been involved in church youth work in Northern Ireland and we continue to feel very passionate about engaging with young people and enabling them to see Jesus and experience the power of God.
“It is our desire that what we have learnt though our time with OMF will be transferable to any mission organisation or church setting. We strive to be a creative couple who want to be innovative and do new things for God, wherever that may be.”
