Who is the course for?

Are you looking for postgraduate study that:

  • allows you to focus on a particular region in Asia, within the context of wider issues in contemporary mission?
  • is taught by Asian and non-Asian staff with first-hand mission experience in the region?
In addition to Redcliffe staff with Asian ministry experience, the programme is also resourced through close partnerships with other related organisations.

Course Structure

The Postgraduate MA in Intercultural Contexts in Asian Studies comprises of four taught modules and an 18,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, relevant to Asia. Students complete the three compulsory modules* and choose a further module from the choice below.
  •     Crucial issues in Asian mission and theology*
  •     Method and content in missiological study*
  •     Independant study module on an Asian worldview*
  •     The mission of the Church in the context of post-colonialism and globalisation
  •     Theology of religions
  •     Prosperity theology and suffering
  •     Bible engagement in intercultural contexts
  •     Just mission – justice issues in intercultural contexts

If you successfully complete four taught modules but choose not to submit a dissertation, you will obtain a Postgraduate Diploma. If you complete the two compulsory modules only, you will obtain a Postgraduate Certificate.

You can study the MA in Intercultural Studies in Asian Contexts over one year full-time, two years part-time or through our flexible learning mode For all modes, the taught component of each module is delivered in intensive blocs, i.e lectures run over several 2-4 day periods with time for personal study between intensives.

Studying the 'flexible learning mode' option...

This distance learning style course is ideal for mission practitioners working overseas or on home assignment, international students, and those who are unable to spend an extended period of time away from the workplace or home. You combine either a 3-week annual residential summer school or four long weekends throughout the year with supported distance learning. The summer school or long weekend teaching runs for the first two years of the MA programme, and then you complete your dissertation over the next year to eighteen months.
