Postgraduate Masters (MA) in Global Issues in Contemporary Mission

Postgraduate MA
in Global Issues in Contemporary Mission

There is an increasing need within mission for practitioners to understand the key concerns within the global framework of contemporary mission. Our Postgraduate MA in Global Issues in Contemporary Mission addresses many of the current issues people face 'on the ground', and explores them in depth. Students can also research the pressing issues of their own ministry contexts.

The MA in Global Issues in Contemporary Mission Modules PDF Download provides a comprehensive overview of the modules available on this course.

Who is the course for?

Are you looking for postgraduate study that:

  • complements your work in an existing mission environment?
  • will further increase your understanding of the 'big picture' of mission?
  • will stretch you academically and allow you to research contemporary missiological issues?
  • is taught by staff with first-hand mission experience?

This validated course can be studied over one year full-time or two years part-time. Those wishing to combine study with a work commitment can also choose our 'Flexible Learning Mode'. This is similar to a distance learning format, with supported independent learning at home combined with annual residential summer schools at Redcliffe.

"I'm from Pakistan and it has been good to explore how to relate biblically to socio-political issues such as post-colonialism and globalisation, and link them missiologically. The staff have been very helpful and I’ve learnt to express myself academically." (student)

Course Structure...

The Postgraduate MA comprises of four taught modules and an 18,000 word dissertation in a contemporary mission issue of your choice. Students first complete two compulsory modules:

  • The Method and Content of Missiological Study
  • The Mission of the Church in the Context of Post-colonialism and Globalisation.

Students then go on to choose two further modules from the following:

  • Theology of Religions
  • The Greening of Mission
  • Telling Stories: The Use of Metaphor and Narrative in Christian Mission
  • Christian Spirituality in a Worldwide Context
  • Prosperity Theology and Suffering: Perspectives and Problems
  • An Introduction to Global Leadership
  • Crucial Issues in European Mission and Theology (from Summer 2009)

If you successfully complete four taught modules but choose not to submit a dissertation, you will obtain a Postgraduate Diploma. If you complete the two compulsory modules only, you will obtain a Postgraduate Certificate.

"Brilliant, challenging, mind-stretching. I've enjoyed deep debates and have gained an increased sense of confidence in my own abilities. The MA has confirmed my sense of calling." (student)

Studying part time over two years...

Studying the MA part time allows you to study exactly the same curriculum as the full time qualification. The compulsory modules are studied during the first year. The second year includes the optional modules and completion of the dissertation.

Studying the 'Flexible Learning Mode' option...

This distance learning style course is ideal for mission practitioners working overseas or on home assignment, international students, and those who are unable to spend an extended period of time away from the workplace or home.
